The Sea 05:06
Away, are we Astray, cast to sea Awake, are we Returning to our bodies The water speaks so softly Listening only will bring us back to shore The water speaks so softly Listening only will bring us back home From islands we can cast a line Between all the thunders of our minds The water speaks so softly Listening only will bring us back to shore And I find it hard to see What is stopping me Down by the sea I find everything is seen Down in between Down by the sea The water speaks so softly Listening only will bring us back to shore

Sea Pan 02:16
She speaks in waves In gull cry and stone In leaping mackerel in the moonlight, She speaks in endless time. To us she lends herself a softness for the heart a primal cry carrying us back, back back to our shore. She speaks in waves and our oceans reply to her When we cry, this conversation unfolds between mouths Rivers winding over skin, down, down Back to where they rest. She talks to the moon at the night and the sun, when twilight lands softly on her shoulders like an eternal heaven flown down to earth. In our bellies she rumbles In her belly, we rose Carried by the mothers that she filled, blessed with her essence, and from her, life tumbles tides on the shore of the world. She speaks in waves and the waves bring us back to her.

Soon I'm gonna be washed up to shore After the water, I will knock at my door Say oh, soon I will see the mountain oh Soon I will be the mountain, oh Two is the number we need to feel whole Blue is the colour my soul takes when it needs to grow Truth is a wave in the ocean Truth comes in waves like the ocean When I am older my roots will grow down in the ground Don't struggle for me, I'm a lost child waiting to be found Say oh, soon I will be the mountain oh Truth comes in waves like the ocean Truth comes in waves like the ocean Truth comes in waves like the ocean Truth comes in waves like the ocean

about

Spontaneously written and recorded in its entirety on the shore of Sidmouth beach in 2018 during the town’s renowned annual Folk Festival, 'In Gull Cry and Stone' is an EP born out of inspiration from and gratitude for the sea.
Experimental and raw, these tracks took form and were recorded down at the water over the course of 6 days, in between busking circus shows, and early in the morning as traders got their morning coffee.
A nod to the purity of imperfection and the joy of happenstance, it features appearances from musicians I met at the festival, and hints of nearby buskers and beach-wanderers, gulls and wave whispers.

All audio was recorded there under increasingly testing conditions, between the shore, the campsite and eventually in the shelter of Sidmouth's well-known red cliffs in a storm.
The EP was post-produced and mixed in Jazz Corner in Bristol with assistance from Miles Ford.

As an extension of the gratitude toward the sea that inspired the formation of the EP, 100% of sales will be donated to Surfers Against Sewage, a Cornwall-based charity dedicated to cleaning plastic from beaches and educating children about ocean protection.

Dedicated to the sea, and my Grandad, Angus Bainbrigge. Rest peacefully. x
